DR. M. KIRK KEENER, D.C.
My name is Dr. Kirk Keener. I am a chiropractor, practicing in the Central Florida and Orlando area. I have two chiropractic clinics, which also serve as Ideal Protein Diet clinics.
My story begins 17 years ago. My first experience with dieting, as an adult, was with NutriSystems® prior to my marriage. I lost 25 pounds in eleven weeks and reached my desired marriage weight of 220 pounds. Within three (3) months of marriage my weight was back up to 245 pounds. Even though I was active and a commissioned officer in the United States Army National Guard, with mandatory Physical Fitness Tests (PFT’s), I never weighed less than 240 lbs. As the years continued so did my weight. By March 1997, as a result of an intentional high calorie and high protein diet for competitive weight lifting, I had gotten as heavy as three-hundred and one (301) pounds.
In 1998 I became Board Certified as a Certified Neuromuscular Therapist (CNMT) and opened a practice working in the field of massage therapy. My focus and expertise was working with pre and post-surgical patients as well as Fibromyalgia patients. I was frequently asked to lecture with a group of physicians on the topics of Pain Management and Treating Fibromyalgia. It was during this time I gave up competitive weight lifting due to a major injury in my lower back. My weight went down to 282 pounds, where I stayed for almost three years until I was able to take a course and become a certified teacher of The Zone Diet®. Due to the back injury I was unable to do heavy lifting and many other gym exercises involving weights so I decided to get involved in endurance based events like triathlons and half marathons. I competed in triathlons for 3 years while at the same time teaching The Zone Diet® at the local YMCA. As a result of the extreme endurance training and dieting very rigorously my competitive triathlon weight was 218 pounds. I thought this was very lean and a really fit weight for me; however, it seemed no matter how hard I worked or no matter how little I ate I could not get below 218 pounds, and that was at 13% body fat.
In 2000 I decided I wanted to help and do more for my existing and future patients so I began my Doctorate of Chiropractic (D.C.) program at Life University in Marietta, Georgia. The triathlons lasted until my educational requirements became too demanding of my time. I gave up the four-hours-a-day endurance training for a simpler, 90 minute, 5 day a week gym visit. Even though I was still applying the eating principles of The Zone Diet®, and doing my 90 minute (heavy cardio) routine 5 days a week, my weight began to slowly but surely come back. Within one (1) year I had gained forty-two (42) pounds and was back up to 260 pounds. As my marriage and family grew to four children, and the demands of school, work, church, and my chiropractic business took control of day-to-day life, another 18-20 pounds came around and I was now 280 pounds once again. As the story often goes, I would exercise, run with my children, and diet for a month or two (here and there) and eventually lose 15-20 pounds to get back down to that 260-265 pound area, which I thought was my bodies “natural” plateau!
In October of 2006 my wife and I lost what would have been our fifth child due to a miscarriage. This event produced a tangible level of depression for each of us-one I medicated with more work and more food; however, in the summer of 2009 my wife and I received the joyful news that we were once again expecting, this would become pregnancy number 6 and baby number 5.
I always say “we” were pregnant because with each of my wife’s 6 pregnancies I too gained weight! As a result of this co-pregnancy weight gain with my wife my weight ballooned to an all time high of 313 pounds. I started Ideal Protein on January 12, 2010 after the birth of our baby son. The decision to begin Ideal Protein was fueled and prodded by our most verbally sensitive/aware child after the comment was made, “Daddy, you’re fat!” This was the exclamation in response to photos of my wife and I holding our newborn son…IT WAS TRUE…I WAS FAT! Sometimes it takes those closest to us or those to whom we know are very sensitive about what is spoken to really connect with us. I certainly did, and I am grateful for it. Thank God my son had enough courage to “call Dad onto the carpet” and to state the TRUTH. My journey has been adventurous, slightly difficult at times, yet extremely enjoyable. I now love foods that I previously would intentionally avoid or “pick off.” I can actually taste and enjoy foods now because I consume them in a more natural state of preparation.
In closing, there are several amazing things to point out concerning Ideal Protein and the incredible results I have achieved: 1. my cholesterol (total 168, HDL 66) is lower now than when I taught The Zone Diet® AND was competing in triathlons! 2. I weigh LESS now than I did when I got married! 3. I have been able to share this with my Mother, who is blessed to have survived a major bout with colon cancer, she has lost over 58 pounds and it has changed her life! 4. Ideal Protein along with my new level of health has re-ignited my passion of helping and changing the lives of others within my profession as a chiropractor! 5. Last, but not least, I too have control again of my life; therefore, I am able to spend it with my wife and children doing the things we all love instead of only what Daddy is physically able to do! THANK YOU IDEAL PROTEIN!!!
